Restaurant Roundup: Mexican spot slammed with over a dozen violations, Mongolian cuisine tasty & pristine!

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Sofia’s Antojitos on North Academy Boulevard failed a recent routine health inspection after inspectors found 13 violations, including moldy bread and flies in the kitchen.

According to the inspection report, an inspector opened a cabinet and found six loaves of moldy bread. The inspector also observed flies in the kitchen, as well as dead flies on a sticky trap hanging from a fruit basket.

The findings were a change from Sofia’s previous health inspection, when the restaurant performed well. KRDO13 stopped by the restaurant to find out what happened.

"People weren’t paying attention to what they were doing but now we retrained them and we fixed it," co-owner Lila explained.

Lila also addressed the fly problem, saying she believes the restaurant is dealing with flies coming from nearby businesses.

"Our neighbors are keeping their trash open, so we’re getting all their trash flies from there to over here," she argued. She would not name the neighboring business.

Lila assured us that the restaurant is working to mitigate the problem, and showed us how they moved the sticky fly trap away from the fruit basket.

Just hours after KRDO13’s visit, Sofia’s Antojitos passed its re-inspection with a perfect score.

This week’s high scores

Several other Colorado Springs restaurants earned high marks in this week’s Restaurant Roundup:

• Burger King on S Academy Boulevard
• Domino’s on E Rockrimmon Boulevard
• HuHot Mongolian Grill on Constitution Avenue, which received a perfect score

From spatula tricks to mixing and matching sauces with meats and vegetables, the spot says it keeps clean by constantly training and coaching all employees, as well as through strong communication.

Keep an eye out for the KRDO13 Restaurant Roundup Awards at your favorite restaurant as a sign that its kitchen has met the inspection standards. A high score means the kitchen has passed its routine health inspection.
