A man was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that turned into a crime spree in San Mateo early Saturday morning, according to the police department.
Officers responded to the 200 block of West 40th Avenue after receiving a report of a hit-and-run crash, authorities said. Police said they found the suspect vehicle, a Nissan Altima, abandoned nearby.
Authorities said they later learned the Altima was stolen, but it hadn’t been reported as stolen.
A witness identified the suspect as David Estrada, saying Estrada ran away from the area of the crash, according to police.
Around 25 minutes later, police said they responded to the 300 block of 41st Avenue after a homeowner reported that Estrada had entered his home and was seen rummaging through a drawer. Authorities said Estrada fled after the homeowner confronted him.
Police said Estrada had also entered and rummaged through a vehicle associated with the home before entering the home.
Estrada was found inside another parked vehicle in the 3900 block of Fernwood Street, according to the police department. Authorities said the vehicle belonged to nearby residents who did not know Estrada and did not give him permission to be inside.
Police said they determined the vehicle had also been rummaged through. During a search, authorities said they found brass knuckles with a window punch and switchblade knife attached in Estrada’s possession.
During a neighborhood canvass, officials said they also discovered another vehicle partially blocking a roadway and driveway. They said Estrada was caught on surveillance video entering that vehicle and moving it from the driveway before abandoning it.
Estrada was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Jail, the police department said.
