A 4-year-old and the mom were injured from an accidental gunshot by dad in Central Florida, according to local law enforcement.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s office stated the 4-year-old girl and her mother were injured by gunshot in Deltona when the dad reported he accidentally discharged his handgun.

Local deputies responded to the home on Boxelder Street and when they arrived, the father was carrying the 4-year-old girl, who had obvious injuries to her chest and arm. Her mother was found inside the home with a towel on her gunshot wound to her leg.

Both mom and daughter were conscious and alert. Deputies provided emergency trauma care and applied tourniquets to both victims, as well as a chest seal on the child. EMS then arrived to take over treatment.

The child was airlifted to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer by Air One, and the wife was taken to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital.

The father told VSO deputies he was getting ready to go to the shooting range when the gun went off as he was attempting to clear it, with one shot striking both victims.

“The facts and evidence gathered during the investigation support an accidental gunshot. No criminal charges have been filed,” the Volusia Sheriff’s Office posted.
